Special Presentation Evening
Wednesday 3rd April was a special Branch Meeting at The Plough, Long Wittenham particularly for a ‘surprise’ guest of honour – Mike Perry. Andrew Stone, the Chairman of MMOC joined us to present the “Jack Daniels Award for Endeavour” to Mike for his services to the Club.
Mike began attending Branch meetings in 1980/81 and soon became Branch Secretary from 1981 until 2002. When not Secretary he has been a long term Committee member. In 1981 he also became MMOC Area Liaison Officer for Area 6, a position he held until 2010. He was also a regular Branch Representative at the MMOC AGM.
In the 1990s Mike was instrumental in setting up a Series MM Rally at Nuffield Place that was repeated for several years. In 2000 he became Secretary of the Club’s Series MM Register and later set up a one-day Seminar for MM owners in 2010 with a follow up in 2012. He has been responsible for many contributions to the MMOC Website through the Series MM messageboard. Widely considered a ‘guru’ on all matters MM he has helped countless people over the years with their cars. At one stage he was most frequently recognised from the rear as that was the view people got as he stuck out from under the bonnet of an MM.
It was a very happy occasion and Branch members attended in record numbers to thank Mike for his years of service and outstanding contributions.
May MeanderThe ‘May Meander’ on Saturday 25 May attracted 9 Morris Minor cars. Meeting in the Recreational Centre car park in Chieveley we drove in convoy through the village passing North Heath, site of the Battle of Newbury in 1643, through Snelsmore woodlands and into the village of Donnington. Donnington Castle was founded in 1386. From the castle car park we walked up to the twin-towered gatehouse, now all that remains after its destruction in the Civil War. This gave us impressive views of the Berkshire countryside. We drove on to Upper Bucklebury via Shaw, Cold Ash and Burdens Heath and enjoyed lunch at The Cottage Inn, joining other cars attending ‘Classics at the Cottage - last Saturday lunchtime every month’.
